What if I need to change my return after I've printed it?

Return not yet submitted

If you printed your return but have not yet submitted it:
  1. Tear or mark the first printing so you can tell it apart from the new one.
  2. Open your return in TurboTax and make the change.
  3. Reprint your return so the new information will be included in the bar code. You can then mail your return.

Return already submitted - CRA

If you already submitted the return to CRA, do not file another return for the year. Wait for your notice of assessment to arrive before asking for changes.

You can ask for a change to a return for a tax year ending in any of the 10 previous calendar years. This year, you can only ask for changes for tax year 2013 or later.

You have several ways that you can change a return:

By mail
Send both to your tax centre:
  • a completed Form T1-ADJ, T1 Adjustment Request or a signed letter giving details of your request (including the years of the returns to be changed), your social insurance number, your address, and a telephone number where the CRA can call you during the day;
  • all supporting documents for the change, including those for the original assessment, unless you have already sent them to us.

Send your current year return separately from any request to change a return for another year.

See Changing your return for more information.

the processing times are usually:
  • online, within 2 weeks
  • by mail, within 8 weeks
It may take longer if:
  • Your request is sent in late summer or fall;
  • Your request needs more review;
  • We have to contact you or your authorized representative for more information or documentation.
When the CRA is done, they will send you:
  • a notice of reassessment showing their changes to your return; or
  • a letter explaining why they did not make the changes you asked for or if no changes were needed.
