Splitting the Québec amount for a child enrolled in post-secondary studies

Some fields on Schedule A are linked to others, and must be overridden to divide the claim. The amounts split between two people cannot equal more than 100% of the total claim.

  1. Open Schedule A.

    If you are preparing a coupled return, make sure you open the Schedule A that has the names and amounts.

  2. Enter the other spouse's social insurance number at the top.
  3. Click the amount on:
    • line 21 for a child in Part A;
    • line 28 for a child in Part B; OR
    • line 54 for a dependant in Part C.
  4. Press F2 on your keyboard.
  5. Enter the amount that you are claiming.

    For example, if the original amount on line 21 was 1000.00 and you are claiming 60%, enter 600.00.

  6. If you are preparing a coupled return, enter the rest of the claim on the other person's return:
    1. Switch to the other spouse's Schedule A.
      Tip: Click the QuickTab at the bottom of the TurboTax window.
    2. Complete the social insurance field at the top of the form.
    3. Override the same line as you did on the first Schedule A and enter the remaining amount.

      For example, override 1000.00 on line 21 and enter 400.00 (the remaining 40%).

If you are not preparing a coupled return with the other person, they need to repeat all the steps on their own return, including entering the dependant and slips, but only enter the remaining unclaimed amount when they override line 21.
