I used the TurboTax desktop version last year
Why should I transfer information from last year's tax return?
Some amounts from the tax return you filed last year are required in this year's tax return. Many are deductions or credits that you couldn't use last year but may be able to use this year. Other transfer amounts are cumulative figures, such as your cumulative net investment loss balance.
If you used TurboTax to prepare your return last year, it's a good idea to automatically transfer this information, along with your personal information such as your name and address, instead of retyping it. Doing so means you won't have to review last year's tax return, saving you time and effort. It will also ensure that there are no typing errors in your carry forward amounts that could cause the CRA to reject your return.
What information is transferred?
All of your personal information and dependant information is transferred or imported from last year's return to the current one. Capital gains information is carried forward, as well as other tax information listed below.
Can I merge two existing returns into one coupled return?
How do I enter carry forward amounts if I did not transfer last year's return?
If you are using the Interview to complete your tax return, it will ask for your carry-forward amounts as you work through it.
If you are using the Forms method to complete your tax return or you prefer to enter all your carried forward amounts at once, use Form CFP (Carry Forward).
How do I prepare to transfer information next year?
If you can, it's a good idea to leave last year's version of TurboTax installed on your computer. That way, you can easily check amounts in your tax return if you need to do so through the year. Next year, you will be able to transfer your information automatically, which will ensure that there are no typing errors in your carried forward amounts that could cause the CRA to reject your return.
If you do uninstall TurboTax, make sure you back up your tax return file (the name will end in .tt23) to removable media such as a CD-ROM or portable USB key. Store your backup with your tax records. Use this backup next year to transfer your information to your new tax return. Before uninstalling TurboTax, create a .pdf file of your return to easily view your return without having to install the software again.
Additionally, you could keep a copy of your tax return file on your hard drive in a place that you will remember, such as in My Documents. When you start the program for the first time, it searches My Documents for tax returns from last year and displays them, making it easy to transfer information from them.
