How do I enter my dependants' basic information?

Tip: If you complete a separate return for your dependant, you can import their information automatically instead.

If you did not complete a separate return for your dependant:

  1. In Forms view, select Dependant on the toolbar.
  2. Enter your dependant's basic information.

If the dependant doesn't have a SIN, leave this field blank.

    1. At Relationship, select the dependant's relationship to you or to your spouse or common-law partner.

For example, if the dependant is your spouse's daughter, choose Daughter.

    2. Enter the dependant's net income (if any).

The net income is the amount on line 23600 of the dependant's T1 General (or the amount it would be if the dependant filed a return).

TurboTax transfers the information about your dependants to Schedule 5 - Amounts for Spouse or Common-Law Partner and Dependants.

  3. At Living with taxpayer, select whether the dependant lived with you in the 2023.
  4. Québec residents: At Child Assistance Québec, select whether you received QPP Child Assistance Payments in 2023.
  5. At Eligible dependant, select whether you can claim the amount for an eligible dependant for this dependant.
  6. If your dependant qualifies for the disability amount, click the Disability transfer box and complete the Federal Disability Amount Transferred window. Fill in this information even if the dependant needs all of their credit.
  7. If you're claiming medical expenses for other dependants (line 33199 of Schedule 1), click the Medical expenses box and enter the amount.
  8. If the dependant is transferring some of his or her 2023 tuition, education, and textbook amount to you, click the Tuition transfer box and complete the steps in the Tuition Fees and Education Amount Transferred window.

If the dependant was a resident of a different province at the end of the year, Contact CRA for the provincial amount you can claim. If the amount that CRA gives you is different from the one TurboTax calculates, you must override the amount that TurboTax has calculated.

  9. Residents of Québec, Manitoba, British Columbia and Yukon: If you can claim child fitness fees, click the Child fitness box and complete the Fitness Amount window.
  10. If you're claiming adoption fees for this dependant, click the Child adoption box and complete the Adoption Amount window.
  11. If you're preparing a coupled return with your spouse or common-law partner, choose who will make each claim on the right-hand side of the Dependant Information window. If you want to split adoption fees with your spouse, go to the Dependant worksheet next.
