Printing overview

You can print your entire return or specific forms at any time.

When you print your return, TurboTax also prints an enclosures list that explains the exact order to put your forms in before submitting them to the CRA.

Tip: No matter how you submit your return, it's a good idea to print a copy or create a PDF file for your own records.

The first time you print your return (or any form from it), TurboTax counts one return against your return limit.

What kind of paper can I print my return on?

What kind of paper can I print my return on?
If you are filing your tax return by mail, the CRA requires you to print it on paper that is:
  • standard 8.5" by 11" size.
  • good quality (at least 32M or 16 lb weight).
  • white, as coloured paper reduces readability.

Depending on the printer and printer driver you are using, the default page margins may be too large. Try this:
  • In TurboTax, go to the File menu and select Page Setup.
  • In the TurboTax - Page Setup window, select Custom Margins.
  • Enter the smallest margins that your printer will accept (0.25 inches or less).
  • Click OK.
If that is not enough, in the TurboTax - Page Setup window, you can also decrease the Scaling, for example to 96%.

If problems continue, you may need to update your printer driver.

What if I need to change my return after I printed it?

What if I need to change my return after I printed it?

If you already submitted the return to CRA, do not file another return for the year. Wait for your notice of assessment to arrive before asking for changes.

If you printed your return but have not yet submitted it:
  1. Tear or mark the first printing so you can tell it apart from the new one.
  2. Open your return in TurboTax and make the change.
  3. Reprint your return so the new information will be included in the bar code. You can then mail your return.

About keying summaries and bar codes

About keying summaries and bar codes

The CRA no longer requires a keying summary (form T1KS ) to be submitted with printed returns. This has been replaced by bar codes which contain tax information in a format that the CRA's computers can read directly. Using bar codes, the CRA can process returns more accurately.

You may see one or more bar codes printed at the bottom of page 1 of your T1 General. You may also see one or more bar codes on page 2 of your T1 General. Don't worry if you don't see one on your return; some returns won't have them.

Québec residents must still submit provincial keying summaries with their Québec tax return. A bar code is usually printed on this keying summary (form TPF-1.W). However, in rare situations, a bar code cannot be printed. Revenu Québec will continue to accept returns without the bar code - you can still submit without it.
